Duck Hunting - East Texas & Northwest Louisiana

I really enjoy duck hunting. You don't have to worry about scent control or being real quiet, you can shoot the bull and have a good ole time while your waiting on the ducks. We haven't seen the greatest amount of ducks but we have seen ducks mostly all wood ducks. I'm hooked, thanks Richard! Just have to put my little brother on some ducks now and get him hooked. Here are some pictures from our trips in east Texas and Louisiana.

With no ducks in sight, we have a chance for a photo op in the Louisiana swamp.

From Slingin Sticks to Slingin Steel

This will be my first year to offically duck hunt. I have always resisted duck hunting in the past because I knew how addicting it could be, this year will be different. I am going to give it my all and try to learn how to duck hunt. So if you have any tips or wanna take me out and show me the ropes, awesome! Here is my first purchase for this duck season.

The Benelli Supernova is the first gun I've ever bought myself. I'm pretty proud of it. The gun feels great and should be a solid performer, but only time will tell. I did a lot of online research before buying the gun and I think I made a good choice.

The last thing I purchased here recently was a duck call. Gotta learn how to speak their language if I'm going to be trying to hunt. So I went with Haydel Game Calls out of Bossier City, LA for my first couple of calls. I know Haydel makes some great calls and from a video I saw online, I decided the DR-85 "The Deceiver" was a good first choice.

My second choice was just a shot in the dark with the DRS-88 Double Reed Cajun Squeal.

I don't really know if these are great choices but so far they sound good to me, just hope the ducks like em!

Big Buffs

This past weekend we had a boat full. We went in search of some big buffalo. My dad came down to try test his abilties on these big fish. He's been shootin shad and little gar but nothing of any size. So thats why he came to Texas, to shoot some big fish. And boy did we find some! Kevin put us all right on the fish! Dad was able to test out the Innerloc Hydro Strike 2 and Quick Draw Arrow Rest on a couple of huge buffalo. Richard was also able to land a huge 55lb fish.

Past Couple Weeks

Well its been an exciting past couple of weeks. We have managed to put some very good large and small mouth buffalo in the boat. These fish are so much fun to see in the water. Here are some pictures from our recent trips.

Bill Montgomery and Freddie Hunt with a 50lb Large Mouth Buffalo. Bill is the owner of Quick Draw Outdoor Gear the makers of the Quick Draw Arrow Rest and Bowfishing Quiver. This is the best bowfishing arrow rest on the market today. It fully captures the arrow so there is no chance of the arrow falling off of the rest. More to come on the quiver! Check them out at www.QuickDrawOutdoorGear.com

Trinity River with RedNeckWonder

This past Friday night Richard and myself headed towards the Trinity River in search of some fish. One of our newly found friends on BowfishingCountry.com invited us over for some fishing. The night started a little slow but we ended up doing pretty well! We shot 60 fish, 50 of which were Buffalo and the other 10 were a mixture of carp and gar. The night ended with a BANG, literally! We blew a tire on the boat trailer about 15 miles from the house. We got out and checked it and Richard decided that we were just gonna ride it in. Fotunately that was the worst thing that happened to us.

Louisiana Bowfishing - Lake Bistineau and Caney Lake

This weekend I had to go in to Louisiana and pick something up for my son. So I invited my buddy Richard along so we could do some bowfishing at the lake my mom lives on. Lake Bistineau was the first place I ever learned about bowfishing. An guy that was older than me talked about it all the time but I never really got it. Well this was the first attempt to fish the lake that I basically learned everything about fishing on.

Lake Bistineau has had a huge problem with Silvania which is a horrible weed that has overtaken the lake. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is desparately trying to rid the lake of it. After arriving and seeing that the weeds had taken over near the camp we decided to load the boat up and go to where the Dorcheat River comes into the lake.

We took my younger brother Joshua, who had never killed anything, along with us. We ended up finding a few small gar and Josh was able to stick a couple.

Richard takes a moment to pose with the new Skiff and an example of the Silvania, which in this spot isn't very bad because it is coming into some open water where it can disperse.

After doing some day scouting down the lake we dicided we wanted a sure thing. So I contacted Bill from Quick Draw and asked him about Caney Lake in his hometown. He gave us a few pointers and so we decided to make the hour drive to see what we could come up with.

We arrived at the lake right after dark and started off towards the first spot. We were seeing HUGE shad, I'm talkin about 2 and 3lb shad. We ended up losing the fuel pump and had to load the boat up. Luckily Bill was on the lake and was willing to be so gracious as to let us bum a ride and chase after some big Grass Carp. We met up with the Quick Draw guys, Bill and Keith, and we started off. The first hole we hit was looking pretty bare, until Richard spotted a Grass Carp and stuck it. It sped off and before we knew it we heard a pop, snap, pop, crack. I thought Richard had lost the whole reel in the water, but after looking the bow over briefly we noticed that the bouy mount had broke off with the bouy (which the carp had). We followed the bouy and got the carp in the boat and it ended up weighing almost 42lbs. Not a bad first carp Richard!!! Anyways as the night led on we found more and more carp and put more and more in the boat! Bill and Keith were EXCELLENT guides and we can't thank them enough for helping us out! Thanks again Bill and Keith!!! Here are some more pics from our trip to Caney Lake.

2009 BAA World Championship - Toledo Bend

Today we went to the Bowfishing World Championship to take a look the boats and see how things are done. We expected to see a bunch of sponsers and stuff like that but to our surprise there weren't any. We did however meet a bunch of great guys and get to see some take off. We even caught an airboat on the prowl looking for fish. Here are some pictures from our experience.
